A 30-year-old Canadian man was arrested in the fatal shootings of his neighbors, a former couple who were killed in separate incidents on the same street in Oshawa, Ontario, authorities announced on Sunday.
Mark Gordon was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Patrick Montgomery, 42, and Andrieana Montgomery, 42, according to an announcement by Durham Regional Police.
Patrick Montgomery was found injured on July 13 after police responded to a neighborhood in Oshawa, near Toronto, and attempted to take him to a hospital, according to a separate release. He died before he arrived there.
Police who were still at the scene received information that led them to a second home on the same street, where they found Andrieana Montgomery dead with a gunshot wound, according to the release.
Adam Karam-Benton, who lives on the street, told Global News he saw Gordon sitting on the curb just minutes after six to eight gunshots had rung out. As he was asking Gordon about the shots, police vehicles began to arrive, and Gordon put up his hands and said “It was me,” according to Karam-Benton.
Authorities have said the motive behind the shootings is still under investigation, and that Gordon knew both of the victims.
Friends told the Toronto Star that the couple had separated and lived at separate addresses in the neighborhood to co-parent their two sons. Gordon rented the basement apartment in the home that Andrieana Montgomery rented, and he lived there with his partner and young child, the Star reported.
Mike Modeste, a close friend of the victims, described them as “devoted teachers who cared deeply for their students” in a GoFundMe launched to raise money for their children.
Patrick Montgomery was a left-winger for the Oshwa Generals from 1999 to 2002. He later became a teacher at All Saints Catholic Secondary School in Whitby, according to the Star. Andrieana Montgomery was an arts and music teacher at Bowmanville High School.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of the Attorney General in Ontario told HuffPost in an email that Gordon is expected to appear in court on Monday.
