    Title:
Antique Bronze Naga Protected Buddha, Lopburi Style, Khmer Influence. Northeast Thailand. 18/19th C.
    Description:
A superb Bronze Naga Protected Buddha, beautifully executed in early Lopburi style art, with Khmer influence, from a temple precinct in northeastern Thailand. The sculpture retains excellent clarity, with well defined features of the Buddha's face and scaley body of the Serpent. The surface shows even wear on the entire surface, with weathering consistent with age, and with stylistic considerations clearly placing the piece to early Lopburi style, which was essentially adopted from early Khmer art, a culture who once occupied the Lopburi region.
Duely noting - such images typically have a inter-connected diadem crown, rising to a cone-shaped cranial protuberance, or ushnisha, which appeared on most all Khmer and Lopburi images.
The Buddha sits in the 'Virasana' pose, meditating on three graduated coils of the serpent king 'Muccalinda', protected by the hooded canopy of its seven-headed cobra. Both hands overlap one another in the 'Dhyana' mudra, the attainment of spiritual perfection, gesture. Buddhas profile is slender, bare-chested, heavily adorned with bejeweled regalia, and lavish triangular earring pendants. Buddha's oval face portrays a serene downcast expression with smiling lips, incised eyebrows connect in the middle, set above almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, small mouth, and elongated earlobes. The head is covered by a conical-shaped 'Ushnisha' enclosed by a interconnected 'diadem' crown, rising to a ornament finial. The seven-headed cobra canopy is finely incised with overlapping scales, as is the hooded reverse intricately carved in conjoined scales of the snakes body, surrounding a centre 'Wheel of life' medallion. The serpents wavering tail is intricately carved in relief, forming the shape of the base.
The sculpture has a dry, un-altered surface, with a superb dark brown patina, covered in wonderful mottled variations of green malachite.
    Data Observation:
Excellent condition, with minor degradation of the surface, with dings, dents, and casting flaws being a natural part of the statue's patina.
