Antique Swedish? Scandinavian Silver Brass Mother of Pearl Carved Box
Presented is an interesting antique silver, brass, and mother-of-pearl box,
possibly of Swedish make. The box dates to the mid to late 1800s. The box is
octagonal in form, with a brass exterior, silver interior, and plaque of mother
of pearl in the lid. The mother-of-pearl is beautifully hand carved with
intricate and unusual designs, including pendulous curtains with hidden faces in
them, a Gorgon type face at the top flanked by crouching sphinxes or similar
chimeric beasts. The exterior of the box has a very ornate floral and foliate
design carved in the brass, showing the silver beneath for an interesting
contrast. Inside the box is an old scrap of paper reading 'Bought in Sweden but
may not be Swedish.'
The box is in great condition. The mother of pearl in the lid is in great
shape, with no chips or cracks. The box shuts nicely. The decoration is nice and
crisp.
The box measures about 2 ¾ by 2 1/8 by 1 1/8 inches, LxWxH.
