Overview:
An exquisite bronze Khmer statue depicting a multi-armed representation of a Bodhisattva. Post-Angkorian Period (1431 to 1863) known as the Middle period or Dark Age in Khmer History.
Description:
Extremely rare bronze Khmer statue of a multi-armed Bodhisattva figure, possibly that of Avalokite'svara, an iconic manifestation of a male deity, depicted standing in ‘Samabhanga’ on a small plinth, with his hands raised in the symbolic gesture of Instruction, the 'Vitarka' mudra, while simultaneously holding attributes.  In Buddhism it is believed that all bodhisattvas are asexual, they appear in various forms in different circumstances. In Khmer, the name is 'Preah Mae Kun Ci Lem', describes Avalokite'svara as the bodhisattva who can take the form of any type of male or female, human or non-human.

The figure is superbly executed in traditional Post-Angkorian fashion, modelled in realistic human form, standing on a small plinth, with his hands holding attributes. The two hands before him hold a Conch and a Vajra (thunderbolt), while his raised hands hold a Discus and Lotus bud.  The multiplicity of the arms emphasizes the deity's immense power and ability to perform several acts at the same time.      The bodhisattva is richly crowned and adorned in jewels, partially unclothed above the waist, wearing a sheer diaphanous garment covering the left shoulder, combined with a long stylized sampot worn high on the hip, secured by an ornate belt hung low about his waist.

The face appears indigenous, typically Khmer, with a serene meditative expression relaying a powerful blend of calm and spiritual enlightenment, with almond-shaped down-cast eyes, arched eyebrows above a prominent nose, wide mouth with an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes draped in elaborate earring pendants.       The head is covered in a floral headdress, enhanced by a cylindrical-shaped 'Chignon' topknot,  embellished with the Buddha 'Amitabha' seated in a shroud, meditating with his hands folded in 'Dhyanamudra', centered on his headdress.
