    Description

This listing is for a John Allender gold and silver coin scale with a patent date of November 27, 1855. The scale was use to verify the accuracy of gold coins that were used for deposit or trade. These scales were used by merchants, banks and the United States Mint. The scale measured one, two, five, ten or twenty dollar gold coins. These coin scales were manufactured by John Allender in the early 1800. He attempted to patient his design. However since the coin scales were already used by the government and merchants alike, his patient was denied. Then the three dollar coin started to be minted in the 1850's, John Alexander again applied for his patient. Since he had not sold any coin scales with the three dollar slot, his patient was approved. This type coin scale was used through 1932.
